Fourth Class Science Astellas Winner!

Congratulations to our Fourth Class pupil, Enda Sheehan, who recently won a Science competition for his whole class, held by Astellas Laboratories, Killorglin. Many thanks to Astellas for the visit to their labs, the interaction with technicians and the hugely generous prize of €500, which will be well spent on STEM resources. It was a very memorable and enjoyable day for all.

The Mad Scientists joined us and told us all about their jobs as microbiologists. Then we had a lot of fun experimenting with dry ice.

The microbiologists told us about the different items they tested for bacteria. We learned that the average desk has 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. Imagine that!! No wonder Ms Mary has planned a desk scrubbing day next Tuesday.

A mobile phone has 18 times more bacteria than a public toilet. (Yuck). We just need to wash our hands more and take care, without being too worried about being ‘ too clean’! Exposure to bacteria can be good too- it prepares our bodies and our immune system to fight back, preveningt us from being unwell.

Clever Clogs in the Board Room

Book Worms in the Library

We enjoyed reading in the library today for Children’s Book Week.So many books, so little time .

We are learning about idioms too such as –
One for the books .

Never judge a book by it’s cover.

An open book.

Take a leaf out of someone’s book.

Read between the lines.

The oldest trick in the book.

We love reading.

The Fourth Class Vikings

Maths Week Day 3.

Maths Quizzes galore on Friday! We held two Mega Quizzes: Junior and Senior. All hands on deck and a hum of concentration prevailed, as each table settled into each round of questions. Each team has a child from each class. It’s a nice way for kids to meet and co-operative with other classes. Maths Week takes a lot of preparation but it’s worth it….

🍀🍀Seachtain na Gaeilge☘️🍀

Bhaineamar an taitneamh as Seachtain na Gaeilge.
Ghlac na paistí ó rang 4, 5 agus 6 páirt i dTráth na gCeist. Ar an Aoine, bhí Céilí Mór againn sa halla. Bhí ceol, craic, scéalaíocht agus rince againn. Buíochas le Ms Gemma. Mhúin sí na páistí go léir i rith na seachtaine agus nuair a tháinig an Lá Mór, bhí gach uile páiste réidh.

Bhí na paistí ag smaoineamh,

Ag obair go dian,

Agus bhí siad ag obair le chéile.

Is fearr Gaeilge bhriste ná Béarla cliste.

COMHGAIRDEACHAS 👏👏👏

Na buaiteoirí 🏆🏆🏆

Three heads really are better than one. Mar a deireann an seanfhocal ‘ Is fearr dhá/trí chloigeann ná ceann’

Bualadh bos do na múinteoirí.

LÁ FHÉILE PÁDRAIG FAOI MHAISE DAOIBH GO LÉIR!

The future is bright. The future is Fourth Class. Engineers of the future.

Fourth Class attend IT Tralee for Engineer Week. Many thanks to all the parents who dropped and collected. We were treated to a fascinating insight into Bloodhound the supersonic car that hopes to break a world record by travelling at 1050 miles per hour. Special thanks to engineer David Price for our workshop.

Ryan bravely assists Dave demonstrating air resistance .

After a great demonstration by Ryan we found out that a crumpled piece of paper has much less air resistance .

Dave explains what the crack of the whip really means .

The crack a whip makes is produced when a section of the whip moves faster than the speed of sound creating a small sonic boom.

Dave demonstrates Newtons third law showing us for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction.

The balloon goes up to much delight, but where shall it land ??

World Book Day Celebrations.

There was great excitement around the school today as we dressed up as characters from our favourite books. Senior pupils read to Junior pupils and shared their favourite Book with them. Fourth class paired with Senior Infants and really enjoyed the experience.

Two children engrossed in a book.

I wonder if the giraffe liked the story!!

Pretty in pink.

Lovely to see a big brother reading to his younger brother in Seniors.

Fairytales here, there and everywhere.

Mr.Bump even met another Mr.Bump. Can you believe it!!!
