World Book Day.

What an interesting day! Thanks to the children from Fourth, Fifth and Sixth classes our youngest pupils were given sugar-free and timeless treats: Good stories! (very Lent-friendly).So many unusual characters wandering our corridors, ruffling their skirts, preening their feathers and wings, straightening their trousers, adjusting their spectacles, sharing books and whispering spells….

Two Mr. Bumps discuss how lucky they are not to be ……Trumps.

The Queen of Hearts reads to both Harry and Harrie Potter, but she knows that Hermione……

can never keep up with her card tricks!

Red Riding Hood has wise tales to tell too. Take her advice. Wolves and strangers can seem nice and kind and funny, but we know the Stay Safe rules, so we are okay!

Thumbelina and Tinkerbell share tips on how to save energy, grow strong wings and sprinkle magic dust efficiently, without leaving a carbon footprint.👼

Fairy Tales? These are the most important books of all!. They set the scene, they introduce us to unforgettable and lovable characters, they pose problems and help us face our deepest darkest fears and then, they resolve the danger, ending happily and safely. They face the challenges that we fear most!

This book has to be the most heartbreaking and loving book of all: A modern classic amongst many. “Where’s my Mummy?” the baby owl cries!.Wonderful illustrations and a story that resonates with every reader, no matter what your age. It faces a fear of darkness, a fear that your mum might not return. It acknowledges the security of sibling and parental love. This book can’t be reread enough to young children.

Thanks are due to all our parents for digging out their children’s costumes and locating their favourite books. Special thanks too to Ms Claire Murphy, Ms Gemma, Ms Adrienne, Ms Claire Slattery and all the young and old bookworms. Long live paper and print and imagination!

Sharing a book is the best thing we can do at home and at school with each other.

Don’t worry! ‘They all lived happily ever after’ (phew!)

Shrove Tuesday

[caption id="attachment_3631" align="aligncenter" width="300"] A haon , a dó, a trí….tóg aire!

The teachers and children were busy mixing batters, tossing pancakes and finger licking. Its quite incredible how many pancakes were produced from such a small kitchen……a lovely aroma and just the odd puff of smoke!

Voilá!

Let’s hope this one lands back in the pan!

[caption id="attachment_3680" align="alignleft" width="300"] This one did!

Agus céard iad na comhábhair? Plúr, seacláid, uibheacha, séacláid, beagáinín ime, seachláid, bainne, séacláid agus……… níos mó seacláide!

Creative Dance with Maria Svensson. K.C.C.

Fifth and Sixth Class were treated to 6 weeks of workshops with Maria Svenssonson

They interpreted the creation of the Solar System through movement and music.

Each group represented a planet and each planet dance was unique, expressing its physical characteristics

Maria had a wonderful ability to elicit dance from all the children.

They dressed the part too!

Thank you, Maria. Teachers and children were so inspired!

Thanks to Ms Claire Murphy for organising the workshops.

Máire Holmes enthralled children and teachers alike, as she elicited great ideas and descriptive vocabulary, while exploring poetry.

Fourth class were very attentive.

Máire had a wonderful way of getting the children to contribute and to laugh!

Ms Claire organised this for Fourth and Fifth class as we acknowledge WORLD BOOK DAY in two weeks time. Children should visit the poetry section in the town library and enjoy reading poetry aloud at home. That,s when it really comes alive.

Also try writing poetry. It’s not just for Valentine’s Day, you know!

A Wonderful Gathering.

We prayed for our grandparents who couldn’t be with us on the day.

We were delighted with the turn out. Our grandparents received a very warm welcome

Donal and Maree were thrilled with the beautiful handmade gifts which 6th class presented: A compilation of poetry, wooden name-plaques, framed tissue-flowers.

Mary Leen, a stained-glass artist from Catherleaheen spoke passionately to the children about following their dreams. Her abstract ‘Glass Box’ symbolised the ‘flame of inspiration’ which is ignited by teachers such as Maree and Donal.

‘The flames spread and grow brighter and stronger’.

The Tunnel of Fame was enjoyed by all our visitors. The children cheered their grandparents, parents, Maree, Donal, Eileen, friends and the odd rogue teacher![/caption]

Hurray for Sir!!

Here comes Ms Maree….

They keep on coming…

Is that Queen Liz and King George I see?

Of course, the best part is always the cake…..

Thank you, Ms Claire: a beautiful wooden cross which she made with pupils two years ago.

Ms Gemma had this signpost up , bright and early in the morning. Her pupils greeted everyone at the gate.👏

Ms Adrienne prepared this simple but beautiful altar- wicker baskets filled to the brim with the children’s crosses. (We were not going to run out of crosses this year!)

Ms Moira came early to help and to admire the colourful entrance which Ms Gillian erected with Sixth Class

The ‘Kitchen Ladies’ were poised and ready for action. All hands on deck.👍Geraldine👍Bridget👍Ciara👍Caroline.

Ms Geraldine had a heavenly touch…..And lots of goodies for everyone

The Dragons Decide.

Click on the Sixth Class Blog below to find out more.

It was almost impossible to decide!. Presentation, creativity, costing, materials, production, labour costs, profit margins and salesmanship- these were important deciders.

Dragons’ Den: The Final Decision.

THE WINNERS!A handmade product which should sell well. These are red birch wooden plaques, made to your specification. The company is called ‘WOOD YOU BUY IT?’ Sixth Class are already taking orders!’

Spring Cleaning in January.

Many thanks to Paudie,Samantha,Kaila and Jayden Sugrue for the time they gave this Saturday morning. They were joined by the usual hard working suspects/parents: Marie and John-Paul Morris,Tara Cullinan,Sarah Fitzgibbon,Cliona Caplis, Caitriona and Rachel Sargent. Paudie worked us hard for 2hours! Well worth it. We swept, pruned, pulled, scraped, cleared, cut back and dug. Very satisfying! Paudie isn’t finished, though. He wants to plant 25+shrubs soon. His generosity is appreciated by all.👍

Science

Which fruits will sink? The big heavy ones, the small ones or has it anything to do with weight?

Surely, the pineapple will sink!

Take a closer look: the melon and other fruits floated because the air packed in the centre around the seeds(melon) acts as a buoy.

Junior Entrepreneurs visit Ballygarry Hotel.

Padraig McGillycuddy welcomes Sixth Class to Ballygarry House Hotel.

‘Bon Appetit!’

Sixth Class were treated to a top class presentation in Ballygarry House Hotel and Spa today. Mr Padraig McGillycuddy’s powerpoint presentation summarised the history of the hotel. He described how effort and persistence, coupled with training and motivation are the skills which entrepreneurs need if they are to succeed. The children were given a guided tour and their day ended with a complimentary and delicious meal! Ms Caroline is most appreciative of the welcome that they received and the time which Padraig, Thys (manager), Aine (reception manager) invested in our future entrepreneurs!

Grandparents Day. Fri., Feb. 3rd 2017. 12.30pm

Spring is around the corner! Don’t forget to remind our grandparents to join us in school for a special ceremony, a warm cup of tea and a chat. We would also like to invite past pupils and past friends of Caherleaheen N.S. as we regretfully say goodbye to Donal and Maree O’Connor, our retiring principal and deputy-principal.

We knew that lobsided parachutes wouldn't work so we took care with the length of our strings: more measuring and cutting. We used various weight for our brave 'parachuters' : marla and Lego men worked well.

We made helicopters from templates. The larger ones flew longer than the smaller ones (clockwise). More surface area=more air resistance!

The longer rotors spin slower than the smaller rotors! And when we bent the rotors the opposite way, both helicopters spun anti clockwise.

Then we added paper clips. This made our helicopters heavier, causing it to spin faster and gravity pulled it to the ground even faster.

Sometimes we have to calm down and take a quick break….ZEN 🙂

Even dogs have to breathe in and be still. (They are quite good at it!) Bruno could learn a thing or two from Third Class 🙂
